Tricks of the Trade
Q: How should I be maintaining my precision ground press brake tools? My dies seem worn and they aren't very old.
A: Consistent performance from a precision press brake tool is closely tied to the condition of the tool. Debris buildup will cause inaccuracies in bend angle, material marking, material cross-contamination, and poor tool life. Fortunately, dies that are treated with Wilson Tool's Nitrex surface enhancement allow for easy cleaning.
Debris buildup on the die often appears as a worn die. Aluminum or galvanized sheet sometimes builds up on the shoulders, which creates a variance in appearance and feel, and is commonly mistaken for a worn die. Several brisk strokes using a Scotch Brite® scouring pad will easily remove the buildup from a Nitrex surface. A light coat of oil before storing the tool will help keep it looking new.
Preventative maintenance will also help preserve tool life. When galling is a known potential problem, a quick visual inspection prior to using, during use, and when putting away tooling will help prevent buildup and damage.
