Tricks of the Trade

Q:    How can I reduce punch breakage while preventing slug pulling?

A:     Traditionally, ejector punches are the product of choice to prevent slug pulling. However, today's use of high strength steel has led to an increase in punch wear and breakage.

Slug Hugger 2An alternative option to prevent slug pulling and strengthening your punch is to utilize a Slug Hugger® 2 die button. Slug Hugger 2 dies offer a unique method of slug retention that allows you to move from an ejector punch to a stronger more durable solid punch. The punch becomes stronger and less prone to breakage when you are able to remove the ejector, the corresponding spring pocket and ejector hole.

Our unique Slug Hugger 2 design also helps eliminate unnecessary back-pressure on punch tips by preventing slug packing. Slug Hugger 2 works on most material types and thicknesses including aluminum, stainless steel and HSLA's. This unique design is available on all die configurations including taper relief, stepped relief, headed and headless.
