Its the Steel

Extreme fabrication applications demand extreme tooling. Xtreme Punches are designed from head to tip to perform in the most demanding conditions, precisely and consistently, hit after hit. It starts with the right steel.
In side by side testing, Ultima® tool steel demonstrated superior performance over materials normally used in tough applications:

  • 86% more toughness than M2
  • 11% more toughness than PM-M4
  • 64% greater wear resistance than M2
  • 25% greater wear resistance than PM-M4

The Xtreme Punch design directs stamping forces through the punch shank and away from the edges – virtually eliminating the most common cause of head failure when stamping heavy gauge and high tensile material. These punches feature increased head thickness (.3125"), increased under head radius (.045 -.055") and a 10-degree taper on the top of the head that is equal in diameter to the punch shank. All these elements add up to a supremely hard-to-beat punch.

For Consistent, High Quality
Round Forms, Get Technical

To get more performance from your press and a superior product, it pays to take a closer look at every aspect of your application. Our tooling technicians are here to work with you on everything from tool design to machine lube to steel and coatings — to ensure you get the best outcome in your most challenging applications.

Impax 21st Birthday Celebration & Forum

On Tuesday May 16th Impax Tooling Solutions® celebrated its 21st birthday in business by hosting a stamping forum and open house in Minnesota. Customers from the Upper Midwest came to hear from industry experts and solutions oriented support personnel. The day was separated into three parts; an educational forum, plant tour and celebration. Guest speakers included Ed Severson from Bohler Uddeholm and Jim Glynn from Special Springs. Learn more about Impax Tooling Solutions at

Choosing the right tool steel for your application can make a measurable impact on your performance

Performance Enhancing Punch Coatings

Punch coatings enhance tool life and performance to levels far beyond that of untreated tool steels

Optima® Coating

Our most popular coating for piercing, blanking, and trimming, with a micro hardness of 3500, Optima® far exceeds the hardness levels that can be achieved with conventional steels and will outlast untreated tools up to 5-7 times.

Optimax® Coating

Optimax® is a multi layer coating, with a base of Optima and a second layer of molybdenum disulfide. It works well in materials prone to galling, and in applications where part lubrication has been reduced or eliminated.

This coating excels in piercing and forming of non-ferrous materials, including aluminum, copper and brass. It has a hardness of 3500 HV, a coefficient of friction of 0.55, and equals improved wear resistance and added toughness.

Forte® is a proprietary multi-layer nano coating that is a great alternative to a CVD coating. It's a good choice for high-pressure applications and punching and forming for high and low alloy steel in all thicknesses.
