Slug Pulling - Causes and Solutions - In the stamping industry, one of the most common challenges in preventing die failure is slug pulling. Slug pulling occurs after the press stroke when the punch is stripped from the subject material and die. This upstroke has a tendency to create vacuum pressure that causes the slug to back out of the die. With a loose slug in a die, the result of slug pulling can be punch and/or die failure, defective (or marred) parts, or misalignment that prevents material from advancing in a progressive die. All of these problems result in costly down time and tool failure requiring replacement.
